You can tell if he texts or IM's you a lot and if he uses lots of smileys like this :) That's usually the first signs from my experience. Also he hugs you a lot and you can tell it's a romantic hug, not just a big friendly one. If he pulls you close and holds you there for a while, that's another sign. And also he makes lots of excuses to touch you, even if it's play fighting or getting 'fluff' out of your hair. That's how you can tell from what i've experienced lol. x
