My Girlfriend Calls Me Stupid!

Dear Advice Girl,

My girlfriend says things like, "You're so stupid!" when I forget someone's name or don't recognize a voice on the phone. It's not a big deal, but it does get to me after a while.

Can I tell her to stop it without making it sound like a big deal?

Dear Night Hawk,

Of course it's a big deal!

Well, maybe it's not a huge deal, but it is a deal. Your girlfriend's hurting your feelings, and she probably doesn't know how much it bothers you.

Tell her how you feel. All the time. Not just about this you're-so-stupid stuff, but about everything. If she says something hurtful, call her on it. If she says something sweet, tell her how that makes you feel, too. The more you communicate, the stronger your relationship will get.

Unless, of course, she totally ignores you and keeps calling you stupid. That would make her a bad girlfriend. Which would be a lovely reason to break up with her.
