I'm afraid my parents will embarrass me!

Dear Advice Girl,

I’ve been dating this really nice guy for almost two months, he’s like the guy of my dreams. But the problem is, I haven’t told my parents yet.

I’m allowed to date and all, but I just don’t know how to tell them. I’m afraid that my dad will ask him tons of questions and my boyfriend will run away from me. And my mom is so embarrassing that I don’t want my BF to be scared to come to my house.

Dear Scared of Parents,

Of course you think your parents are embarrassing. I mean, they knew you when you were still sucking your thumb and wetting the bed – they totally won’t play along with your cool new high school persona. Plus, they have no idea what it’s like to go through all the stuff you’re going through – flirting, dating, making friends, trying to be popular.

Well, okay. They did go through all that stuff when they were teens – let’s give ‘em some credit for that. But no matter how much they might sympathize, their needs are always at odds with yours. You wanna spend all night at a house party, they want you home safe in your bed. You want to bring over your cutie boyfriend to cuddle and watch TV, they want to barrage him with annoying questions and make sure he’s decent enough to date their little princess.

Here’s the good news – everyone’s parents are like that. And everyone’s too busy being embarrassed by their own parents to really care too much about yours. So quit stressing over it and bring your boy around for dinner one night . He might think they’re a little funny, but he totally won’t hold it against you. (He’ll be way more nervous about it that you are, anyway.)

i was afraid of wat my parents would do too. turned out they only asked a couple questions that he was ok with answering nd as far as embarrasing goes, lets just say my bf started singing with my mom every time we were in the car.

Not only that one time I was out at the mall and my dad had heard some boy whistle at me. I just ignored the boy and caught up to my dad. About that time my dad had turnt around and walked up to the car the boy was in and started questioning him. I stayed away with my face turning red. Dad then walked back to me and asked what was wrong which of course he knew he then had told me you should not be embarrassed since the dude was in a car full of girls at least you must have been nicer looking then them. My dad also embarrassed me all the time around Henry I rember me saying that I wanted to go up on the hill with my dad and I didn't know Henry's name that well or him and when we got up there dad had told him that I wanted to come up to see him. Thinking things couldn't get worse I had told my dad I was going to go and ride around on the 4-wheeler....before I got to go anywhere dad had asked Henry if he wanted to ride the other one. I had wen't down to the flat hoping that Henry wasn't going to follow me and sure enough he did. So I drove on down to the house and parked the 4-wheeler then ran in side. I do feel bad about it now but I was embarrassed with him following me on the other 4-wheeler

My dad embarrasses me all the time also my dad's brother does to...and so what joke around with them...the first time Henry meet my dad's brother who is very bad trust me if you knew him you would get what I mean. My uncle had came down to talk to Henry, Rick, and Jim. I was only 13 at the time my uncle started making dirty jokes and had said things about girls breast when they get older. My face turnt red but I had looked over at my uncle shaking my head. After he walked off all 3 of them was watching me. They had asked me who was that and I told them still embarrassed about what all had just been said. I told them just ignore him. Not only that my dad has embarrassed me in front of Henry also. Me and Henry are the same age only 9 months differents. Though everytime Henry is around I get treated like I am a child compared to Henry. Yes it did bother me and embarrass me by how my dad acted. I did just walk off and told my dad later that I wanted him to stop doing that. Though I have been embarrassed by even family friends around Henry he always though that it was funny. Not only that his dad and brother would try to embarrass him in front of me. Its easier when they do embarrass you is if you just laugh it off and make jokes with your boyfriend. It makes things easier on you and you don't feel so embarrassed bout it.

joke with him about your embarassing parents, the best way to make him think you dont care is joking around about things and making yourself the joke.
