Tips For Writing a Great Love Letter!

Dear Advice Girl,

I just got a new girlfriend, and I want to tell her how I really feel about her by giving her a love letter. Do you have an example of one I could use?

Dear David,

The #1 rule of love letters is that they should come from the heart. Your heart, not mine. If I gave you a cheat sheet, wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose?

If you want to be a total cornball, copy a letter from a site like this. But if you want to give your girlfriend something that she'll actually treasure, use your own words.

Need help getting started? Here are some tips for writing a great love letter:

1. Write it in a quiet place, without distractions. You want your mind on your sweetie, not the score of the basketball game.
   
   
2. Write it out. (On real paper.) Emails are convenient, but she'll cherish your letter way more if she can actually hold it in her hands. Don't just type it and print it out, either. Handwriting is way more special.
   
   
3. Always include the date. That way, in twenty years when she finds it in her attic or something, she'll know exactly when you gave it to her.
   
   
4. Don't use a bunch of flowery words you wouldn't really say. Phrases like "from the depths of my soul" come off as corny and fake if you're not a "depths of my soul" kind of guy. Speak in your real voice.
   
   
5. Don't ramble. You might feel like a champ for filling up ten whole pages, but ramblings are hard to read. Stick to clear, concise points, just like Mrs. Rakow in 7th grade English taught you.
   
   
6. Don't compare your sweetie to other people. Especially not anyone you've dated before. It's creepy.
   
   
7. When in doubt, just list the things you like about her. The more specific, the better. She'll love it.
   
   
8. Check your spelling. Ugh. Actually, check your spelling when you're writing letters to me, too.
   
   
9. Write another one. You can't really sum up your feelings for her in one letter, can you? Letters are real, tangible keepsakes that'll always remind her of you. Send her a bunch and she'll never forget you.
