What Makes a Good Friend?

What's the definition of a good friend? And how do I know if my friends are my true friends are not?

Dear Alison,

Glad you asked! There are six qualities that every good friend should have. If your pals are short a couple of these, they're probably not your true friends:

1. A good friend will tell you the truth (even if it's something you don't want to hear). Think about it: if you never know when your friend's lying, then what's the point of talking to her?
   
   
2. A good friend will hear you out. Just as important as being honest is being a good listener, especially when you've got something important to talk to her about.
   
   
3. A good friend will stand up for you. Hopefully, you'll never be in a situation where you need to be defended - but if you are, your friend ought to have your back. (Assuming, of course, that you're right. And if you're not, kindly refer to quality #1.)
   
   
4. A good friend isn't just about the fun times. When you're going through something tough - like family trouble, or a bad breakup - your good friends are the ones who keep checking in on you.
   
   
5. A good friend is someone you can trust. If you can't trust your friend with your secrets, then she's not much of a friend. (Shoot, she's practically your enemy).
   
   
6. A good friend will apologize. Even good friends screw up sometimes. If your friend apologizes for her mistake, then she values your friendship more than she values being right all the time.
