Is love at first sight a real thing?

Dear Zoey,

This question gets asked a lot - especially by people who really, really want to believe it's real.

Well, you can quit your guessing, 'cause here's the answer:

Kinda.

Here's what I mean. Love is a complex feeling, way deeper than just a crush. Love means that you know someone well enough to trust and respect them - and you can't get all that from just one look.

So in that respect, you can't fall in love at first sight.

But you can get a different feeling, which I call an insta-crush. An insta-crush inspires you to get to know someone, to act more kindly towards them, and to sacrifice a piece of your own happiness to make them happier. And that's the sort of thing that evolves into love over time.

So while you might feel like you're falling in love at first sight, you're really just setting the love wheels in motion. Which is a pretty awesome feeling too.
