My gf thinks I'm lying about my love!

Dear Advice Girl,

My girlfriend never believes me. I haven’t done anything to make her not believe me, I’m always honest with her, but she doesn’t even believe me when I tell her I love her or that I miss her, but she tells me she loves me. What is going on? What do I do?

Dear Steven,

Sounds like your girlfriend is insecure. If you don’t love yourself all that much, it’s hard to believe that someone else could, even if he hugs you and kisses you and compliments you all the time.

(Which reminds me of some other good advice: always accept a compliment. When someone says something really nice to you, say thanks! Never say, “Pshaw, whatever, my hair so does not look good today.” It’s tacky, and sad, and makes the other person feel bad.)

But back to you and your girlfriend. When she calls you a liar, don’t get huffy and take it personally, ‘cause remember, it has nothing to do with you. Instead, look her in the eyes and tell her, “I hope you believe it one day. Because it’s true.” And try to boost her confidence in other ways – give her compliments, and if she puts herself down, try to prop her back up.

Who knows why she’s so insecure, or how long it’ll take her to believe how you feel. But hopefully, with your encouragement, she’ll figure it out a lot sooner.
