The new prom rules!

Dear Loyal Readers,

Prom night has come a long way from teased-out bangs, ruffled dresses and spiking the punch.

So the folks here at eSPIN asked nearly 1,000 teens to come up with some new prom rules for 2007. Here's what you told us:

• Almost all of you (93%) think that guys should open the car door for their dates, and most (59%) think that the guy should foot the bill for prom tickets, no matter who asked whom.

• Speaking of that, most of you (61%) think that the guy should always ask the girl to prom, or at least that a girl asking a guy is still kind of weird.

• Y'all are so open-minded. Most of you (80%) think same-sex couples should be allowed at prom, and most (68%) think it’s totally fine to go to prom by yourself.

• Most girls want to wear a "glamorous" dress (56%) to prom. Boys don't care about all that - they just want their dates to wear one that's "sexy" (56%) (shocker).

• Girls should get their dresses before they even get a date. Start looking for a dress 2 months before prom (36%) and a date one month after that (33%).

• If you can’t get a date, just go by yourself (41%) - it beats going with someone you don’t know that well (31%) or skipping prom altogether (15%).

• Cheap wins out over spensy this year. $200 is the right amount for both girls (18%) and guys (22%) to spend on their prom looks.

• 68% of you say that your folks are responsible for coughing up at least half of your prom expenses.

• Who says you boys aren’t romantic? 59% of you think it’s proper to dance all of the slow songs with you dates. (Only 40% of the girls agree.)

• In the shocker of the year category, guys say that prom is a perfect night to have sex for the first time (65%). Girls aren’t so sure (38%). Plus, most girls (60%) don't feel more pressure to have sex just 'cause it’s prom. So good luck with that, guys.
